Additional thoughts - 1.9-10

As we begin a new week together I am excited to once again explore thoughts and responses to God and His incredible truth in His Word.  I hope you crave His Word as I do. What a wonderful gift to hear the very heart of God.  Delving into His Word is life changing.  If we not only read the words but read beyond the words into the purpose and heart, our lives are strengthened and inspired.  Days that seem to be mundane become colorful. Problems that appear to be insurmountable become more obscure instead of our focus. Realizing His great love and wonderful plans for us encourage us to take each step in this New Year with renewed vigor and life.

Let’s continue in our discussion of the deep truths of Philippians 2 again today.

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.   Philippians 2:5-11 ESV

Verse 6 reminds us that Jesus preexisted “in the form of God”.  What does this mean?  Think about this for a moment.  Jesus was and is fully God.  That means all the attributes that God has, Jesus had.  Meditate on that awesome truth.  Jesus was omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, holy, just, eternal, unchanging, loving, forgiving, and so much more.  Our time and space will not allow us to list all the attributes Jesus held.  But, if we pause in reading this passage and take to heart what these few words mean, we can’t help but give praise and glory to God for the gift once again of the baby boy, Jesus.  We need to understand who He is before we can truly grasp the extent of His humiliation when He left heaven and came to earth.

Scripture tells us in the next few verses that Jesus “did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”  Can our limited minds possibly grasp hold of what this means?  Can our weak vocabulary ever come close to describing the depth of His sacrifice for you and me when He left heaven and came to earth?  It is not possible for me to explain this away or do justice to “teach it”.  Take time to allow the Holy Spirit today to speak to your heart and mind.  Think of what Jesus gave for you.  Praise and thank Him for the extent of His deep love and devotion to leave all that heaven offered and take upon Himself the form of a servant. What incredible an incredible truth this truly is.
