Additional thoughts (Feb 25)

Let’s continue to tear down the idolatry of immorality in our lives today. It is all around us as we have seen this week in our time together. Consider with me that David’s temptation with Bathsheba was not sin in and of itself. The sin was not that David saw her; the sin was his response to what he saw. David set himself up for failure when he wasn’t doing what he was suppose to be doing, had too much free time on his hands, had no system of accountability around him, took no heed of the warning signs and plunged ahead into the sin of immorality. David slew the giant Goliath earlier in his life but at this point in his life another giant slew David.

David enjoyed one night of passion with Bathsheba yet he paid for it with a lifetime of consequences.

2 Samuel 12:9-10(ESV)
Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’

God decreed that David’s life would be filled with a life time of violence. Was it worth it? I am sure not. The same holds true for you and me. Galatians 6:7 says, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” We may think we are getting away with secret sins, but truthfully, there are no secret sins. God sees it all. And, He promises we will reap what we sow. Sin always escalates. At first the sin is in the mind. Then it begins to be worked out into our actions. Then it leads to full engagement. Finally, we suffer the consequences of the sin. If you are walking down that path today, stop dead in your tracks. Don’t go one step further. Stop now. Intimacy and idolatry to immorality creates a kind of insanity. Stop. Get help.

1 Corinthians 10:13(ESV)
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

God promises in this passage that there is no temptation that is stronger than He is to help you out. Run to Him. Admit you are facing a giant. Surrender to His leadership and direction. If you have a friend that is slipping take the time to confront that friend with his/her sin. Admonish them. Yes you are taking a risk of losing a friendship, but isn’t it worth it? Sexual sin destroys character. Your friend is already choosing a deadly path. Take the time, love, and care to help provide a way out.

Humble yourself today before God and turn away from evil.

Proverbs 3:7(ESV)
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

God loves a broken spirit, a contrite heart, and a humble man. Spend time today asking God to examine your heart. Is there anything in there that is not of Him? Surrender today.

Psalm 51:16-17(ESV)
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psalm 139:23(ESV)
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!

Prayerfully,

Dennis
