The Life of Jesus
(continued)
Already this week we have seen the path of the humiliation of Christ followed by exaltation of Christ by His Heavenly Father. Yesterday we looked at the title Lord that reveals a status never before seen.
Philippians 2:9-10 says, “Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth”.
At the name of Jesus every knee will bow before Him. The bowing of the knee refers to worship. It teaches us that the normal response to recognizing Jesus as Lord is worship. It is humbling bowing in praise and adoration, in submission and recognition of the worth of Christ. Our response to the Lordship of Christ reveals our heart. How can we help but worship Him as we recognize what He has done for us and submit to His authority in our lives?
Not only will we bow our knees, but we will also confess Him with our mouths. Verse 11 of Philippians 2 says, … “and every tongue confess…”. God has given His Son a name that is above every other name and our response to that will be either now or later, that we bow our knee and speak forth with our mouths, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Have you done this today? Have you paused in your busy schedule to proclaim Him Lord? He is Lord, but have you submitted to His authority in your life today?
What is your purpose in life? Think about this with me. We hear speakers speak on this subject. We teach our children a purpose. We often times say our purpose but truly our calendars, bank accounts, and possessions reveal what our purpose is. Many times the purpose we claim is actually very self- centered. We focus on maybe doing something good, but our main objective is ourselves. We sometimes define God’s purpose based upon what we think we need or what we think we are good at. For example, my purpose in life is to be a good mother. Or, my purpose in life is to provide a good income, be a good doctor, be a compassionate friend, provide for the homeless, etc. These all may be worthwhile goals, but they should not be our purpose. Our purpose clearly declared in Scripture is to glorify God. To glorify God means to bring honor, recognition, respect, worship, and praise to God.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20(ESV)
19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
We will look at this again tomorrow, but for now, pray and ask yourself, Do I live to glorify God? If so, how am I glorifying Him? What am I doing to bring Him honor? How does my life praise Him?
