Your Calling in Life

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  Philippians 2:5-11 ESV

This week we have been exploring the godly character quality of humility. A life of humbleness is our calling in life. It is what pleases our Heavenly Father and as an added bonus blesses everyone around us. Let us remember that humility begins with our subordination to God. When you get up each morning, do you pause to realize God’s sovereignty in life? Submit yourself to Him each new day. Stop long enough to recall your dependence upon Him for everything in life. He is your supply. He is your shelter, your rock, your sustainer; in fact He is all that you need in life.

Next we need to recall that humility expects no other treatment than Jesus got. Matthew 10:24-25 says, “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household”. If Jesus was rejected for His stand in life, we should expect no less. If Jesus was ridiculed for His faith, we should actually stand honored to be treated the same.

In the passage above, Philippians 2:5-11 Paul follows Christ from His preexistence, His incarnation, through His death and culminates in His exaltation in heaven. If anyone has reason to not be humble, it is Christ. Yet, through this passage we see how incredibly humble He was. Are you motivated to serve others as Jesus did? Are you amazed when God uses you? Do you accept personal responsibility when you are wrong? Do you learn from criticism? Do you repent quickly when you realize you have sinned? If so, you are on the road to becoming a humble person.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 says, “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Tomorrow let’s look at how we can develop more humility in our lives. It really comes down to this. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. I want that grace, how about you?
