Servant Leadership: Following Jesus
Jesus said,…”but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28
Meditate:
Jesus is King, but he expressed His leadership on earth as a the Servant Leader. He shows us the heart of a king who truly loves people and wants them to share in the joy of His kingdom. Jesus models for us what a real humble servant does. He did the most menial things in His ministry on earth to show kindness to others—things that, “humanly speaking,” we may never consider doing. He left His heavenly kingdom and never sought after earthly comforts and depended on His Father to supply His needs temporally on earth and in eternity. Jesus demonstrated His humble servant leadership when He washed feet, He cooked meals, He spent time loving children, He fed thousands, He touched lepers, He cared for the needy, He cast out demons with His words, He crossed cultural boundaries to talk with women and gentiles, He even carried His own cross to His execution to pay the penalty for our sin. He taught with His words and His actions. If we are to be like Jesus, our King, we must not only learn His words, but He invites us to lovingly emulate His actions.
Pray:
Lord Jesus, just as you have modeled Your servanthood for us, help us to humbly model Your servanthood to others. Thank you for being our precious Servant Leader. Please open our eyes and heart to see those in need. Help us not to see needy people as a bother or an imposition, rather let us see them as Your loved one, even as we are your loved ones. Your grace and love towards us is so amazing. Let us always extend Your grace and love to others in a way they see You, sweet Savior, and their soul is blessed by Your love.
