As the Spirit led and the pastor preached on what would become a lengthy sermon series focusing on Luke 4:18-19 in 1999, God began to stir the hearts of His people at Henderson Hills Baptist Church. The question in response was, “If Jesus ministered to spirit, soul, and body, what is He calling us to do?”
A team of church members began seeking, praying, and planning. After 10 months, Ministries of Jesus medical clinic opened in 2001. The counseling component was added in 2005 providing services for a need much greater than anticipated. And in 2009, the dental clinic opened, addressing the connection between good oral health and good physical health. Although these ministries were bearing fruit, it seemed something was missing. At an evening service at HHBC, a young man wandered in off the street looking for a place of comfort and stumbled in to a testimony night about addiction. Afterward, the man handed a pastor his needle and shared about his addiction and need for help. With that, God made it clear this was the missing piece at MOJ and in 2009, the recovery ministry began.
Thousands of lives are impacted each year at Ministries of Jesus, all by God’s leading and provision. Prayer abounds and sharing Jesus is their passion. MOJ, along with a partner ministry in south Oklahoma City and a sister clinic in Somotillo, Nicaragua, are impacting lives in desperate need of healing only Jesus can provide in spirit, soul, and body.
The medical and dental clinics at MOJ serve patients who have no public or private third-party payer coverage and whose personal resources are insufficient to provide for their needed health care. Christian medical professionals from the community volunteer their time, talent, and resources to help others in need. Those who come to MOJ for medical appointments include people with various religious beliefs, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
Ministries of Jesus provides counseling to clients in a caring and confidential setting by licensed professional counselors committed to bringing Christian principles from a Christ-centered world-view into the therapeutic experience. Counseling is available for anyone, regardless of ability to pay and clients of all faiths are welcome to receive counseling at MOJ. Ministries of Jesus offers whole-person healing. If clients are found to be in need of other in-house services such as recovery or social services, clients may be referred.
Recovery is an outreach of Ministries of Jesus dedicated to providing resources for those seeking freedom from hurts, habits, or hang-ups. The Recovery Ministry provides a safe, professional atmosphere to become free from the pain of the past, chaos of the present, and fear of the future. Celebrate Recovery is offered on Monday nights at 6:30 pm on the campus of Henderson Hills. Step Studies are also offered at various times throughout the year.
Many in our community need someone to come alongside them and help make connections with resources to assist with immediate, tangible needs. Social Services at MOJ does this by providing referrals to resources and helping people develop skills that will ultimately lead them to live a life of self-sufficiency through Christ.
It is a misnomer that support groups are for "other" people - those who are weak. Support groups are for anyone that wants to better their lives in a particular area. Believers or not, strong in their faith or not, all who attend a support group are saying, "I want to improve my life." Those who join, find encouragement to do just that. Support groups offered vary by semester.
The mission of Ministries of Jesus is to glorify God by offering whole-person care for the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of anyone seeking assistance. This ministry could not exist without the compassion and kindness of over 175 volunteers giving over 16,000 hours annually! Consider getting involved and using your gifts to serve others.
